Dr. Salim's inaugural statement as President of the 34th regular session of the United Nations General Assembly. He has an honest assessment of the daunting challenges that the UN faces as he lists all of the ongoing challenges facing the international community.

"Today is not the darkest hour of mankind nor is it a sunny day. For it is still one of the unpleasant facts that millions of the world population continue to live in economic misery and other deprivations; many others, especially in Africa, the Middle Eat and Asia, are suffering from the humiliation of being a subject people under colonialism, racism, and other forms of domination and indignities." - Dr. Salim, September 18, 1979
