The North-South Summit took place in Cancun, Mexico from October 22-23 and featured a number of high-level dignitaries and leaders. Julius Nyerere, President of Tanzania, was present and so was Ronald Reagan, President of the United States - setting up an intense few days of lobbying and counter-lobbying ahead of the UN Secretary General elections that took place on October 27. That race was between incumbent Kurt Waldheim and Dr. Salim - who was vetoed by the United States on account of his efforts to reinstate the People's Republic of China in its rightful place at the UN.
