Letter to Sultan Qaboos bin Said
“It is my firm conviction that the brotherly Sultanate of Oman has an important role to play… It is therefore my sincere hope that before long a new era will be opened in the relations between the Sultanate of Oman and the United Republic of Tanzania.” – Dr. Salim to Sultan Qaboos, March 5, 1980
During the visit, Dr. Salim traveled to several areas of Oman, including Salalah and Jabal Akhdar, observing the country’s development initiatives firsthand. At the time, Sultan Qaboos was still in the early years of his leadership, having come to power in 1970 and embarked on an ambitious program of modernization and national development.
The discussions between Dr. Salim and Sultan Qaboos focused on international affairs and the role of Afro-Arab cooperation in promoting broader international understanding.
The correspondence also highlights an important diplomatic link between Oman and Tanzania. Before returning to New York, Dr. Salim met with Julius Nyerere and conveyed Sultan Qaboos’s views on strengthening relations between the two countries. The letter expresses hope that a new era of cooperation would emerge between the Sultanate of Oman and Tanzania.
