Letter to Shrimati Indira Gandhi of India
“I had the great pleasure and privilege of representing Tanzania in India in the mid-sixties when you were Prime Minister. I had come to admire and respect your dynamic and committed leadership.” – Dr. Salim to Shrimati Indira Gandhi, March 3, 1980
In this letter, Dr. Salim expresses his appreciation to Prime Minister Indira Gandhi for the hospitality extended during his official visit to India. Prime Minister Ghandi recently returned to office following the 1980 Indian general election.
The letter also highlights Dr. Salim’s earlier diplomatic relationship with India. In the mid-1960s he served as Tanzania’s representative in New Delhi, a period during which India and Tanzania maintained close ties within the framework of Afro-Asian solidarity and the broader Non-Aligned Movement.
