Letter to Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan
“I was inspired by your reaffirmation of commitment to strengthen and promote the ties of friendship, solidarity and co-operation between the African and Arab nations in the context of promoting international understanding.” – Dr. Salim to Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, March 7, 1980
This letter was addressed to Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, then Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces. It followed Dr. Salim’s official visit to the United Arab Emirates, where he met government officials and visited several cities including Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, Dubai, and Sharjah.
The correspondence reflects the growing diplomatic relationship between African and Arab states in the late 1970s and early 1980s. At the time, many African countries were strengthening political and economic ties with Gulf nations, while also working through international forums such as the United Nations to promote cooperation among developing countries.
