“The Frontline States also don’t want Soviet troops in Angola.” – Dr. Salim, September 3, 1982.

This record captures a discussion between Dr. Salim and the Ambassador of the Soviet Union, H.E. Yuri A. Youkalov, held in Dar es Salaam on 3 September 1982. The conversation focused on developments in negotiations concerning Namibian independence, particularly the debate over proposals linking the withdrawal of Cuban troops from Angola to the implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 435.

During the discussion, Dr. Salim reaffirmed the position of the Front Line States rejecting this linkage and emphasized the need for continued international support for Angola in the face of South African military pressure.
